Wall lamps are a great way to light up spaces without occupying valuable table and floor space, and they are an easy way to add a touch of stylish design. They also work well in bedrooms to provide soft lighting for reading or bedside purposes.
Installing a lamp on wall is simple and relatively inexpensive, and it can be done by anyone with basic electrical knowledge. However, if you are not sure what to do and would prefer to have the help of a professional, we recommend that you call in a Lamps Plus certified lighting consultant for assistance.
The first step is to determine where you would like your wall lamp mounted. Measure – and measure again – to make sure that you’re getting it right, before making a mark on the wall where your new light fixture will go.
Once you’ve got your mark, then you can start to fit the base plate of the light. This is where the wiring will be run, so you should have it spliced to the black and blue wires in the connector block (which has two or three openings). You’ll need to strip back a little bit of the plastic around each one, up to 0.5cm, to allow for a good connection.
Next, you’ll need to connect your new lamp to the mains. This can be done by either using a cable with a plug on the end, or if the lamp has a connector block, you’ll need to attach it directly to the connector block. The most common way is to use the two wires that go to the mains, a black and blue wire or an earthed/ground wire (yellow-green).
If you’re connecting a lamp with a cord, then you’ll need to connect it to a socket on the wall that you can access. You can do this by removing the cover from the lamp, which usually has a cord with a plug on the end, and then inserting the connecting cord through the connector block. You can then plug it into a socket on the wall and your light will be ready for use!
You can also choose to leave the cord hanging from the lamp, if you’d prefer a more discreet look. You can also drill a small hole on the back of the wall lamp and place the plug and cord on this to create a more fitted and not dangly look.
Now you’re ready to assemble the lamp back to its original form, and then it’s time to insert the light bulb. This is where you’ll need to make sure that you have the right bulb if you don’t have it already, as this will make the installation much easier.
Whether you’re looking for the sleek, modern style of a swing arm lamp or the traditional look of a sconce, there are many styles to choose from. It’s important to choose the style that is going to fit your decor best.
